5 Signs You’re Falling Victim to Asphalt Paving Scams

Sadly, there are paving contractors and companies that value profit more than their integrity. Some resort to cheap tricks and scamming methods to increase their profit, even at the expense of a poor quality service and the suffering of clients.

So to help you not fall victim to these ill-willed companies, here are 5 signs to look out for when finding a paving company or contractor.

#5 Extra Asphalt Sales Pitch

Reputable and professional asphalt contractors are able to estimate with great accuracy the amount of paving materials needed to complete every project. This means that it’s rare, or even impossible, that they have extra asphalt from past projects. When approached by a paving contractor using this pitch, do not put your entire trust on them. To be sure, investigate and ask where these affordable and extra paving materials are from.

#4 Extra Warranty Sales Pitch

There are paving contractors that offer added cost for extending warranty period if they’ll sealcoat your asphalt driveway or pavement early. This waves a major red flag on your paving contractor or company. For starters, sealcoating is done 6 months after asphalt installation. Any company or contractor that offers to sealcoat at an earlier period is usually a sign that you’re being taken advantage of. And instead of sealcoating, these contractors usually use a less dense emulsion of tack coat to cover the surface of your asphalt pavement / driveway.

#3 Cash Transactions

Most reputable companies and contractors take checks or credit cards as a mode of payment. Be careful of companies that require cash-only terms, as well as upfront cash payment modus operandi. Always opt for paying through checks and credit cards to ensure that you have a means to protect your money.

#2 Uninsured Paving Contractors

Legit and professional paving contractors and companies always have up-to-date insurance and bonding. When your paving contractors are not insured, there is a possibility that you will have to cover for additional expenses in case something bad happens while they’re working on the project.

#1 Lack of Written Contracts

Never risk dealing with companies and contractors that only do business through verbal agreements. Ask your paving contractor / company for a written contract with complete details of the project. This contract has to be signed by both parties. However, make sure that you will read it thoroughly before signing.
