Asphalt Installation Process and Procedure

When it comes to asphalt pavement installation, you can always hire a paving contractor to handle everything for you. However, it still pays to be knowledgeable about the asphalt installation process.

For starters, here’s a quick guide on the installation of asphalt pavement.

Removal of the Existing Surface

The first thing to do when paving asphalt is to remove the old surface. This can be done with heavy machinery such as bobcats or dump trucks. You will then have to clean the debris. If the existing layer is made from asphalt, your paving contractor can recycle it.

Surface Grading for Drainage

After removing the old layer, the next thing to consider is water drainage. Asphalt pavements and standing water don’t really make a good combination. The best way to avoid damages caused by standing water such as potholes or cracks is to make sure the surface is properly sloped to allow water to run off.

Subbase Preparation

The subbase is the layer of aggregate material which is laid on the subgrade. It’s the layer of the pavement which bears all the load. That’s why it is necessary to make sure that it’s stable and thoroughly compacted.

Proof Roll Test and Subbase Repair

After grading and compaction, your paving contractor will then have to ensure that subbase can really support the new layer of asphalt. Proof roll tests are carried out to determine if your pavement is properly supported. They will then have to look and repair soft spots.

Asphalt Binder Course

Binder layer adds strength to the new asphalt surface. It is made from large aggregates mixed with oil to make it strong and durable.

Installation of New Asphalt Surface

After all the layers have been tested and strengthened, a new layer of surface can then be installed. The asphalt mix is usually in jet black color which is made from smaller aggregates, sand and oil. After which, this layer is to be smoothed and compacted by using a roller truck.
