Most Frequently Asked Questions About Asphalt Paving

What are the benefits of asphalt?

Asphalt has a lot of benefits, making it a more ideal choice than concrete pavements. Some of its benefits are:

  1. Asphalt pavements are durable and long lasting.
  2. Installation of asphalt pavements generally requires less time and expenses.
  3. Asphalt requires little maintenance.
  4. Asphalt is recyclable. Used asphalt can be recycled and reused to create a new asphalt pavement. Recycled asphalt are even more durable than new asphalt.

How long does an asphalt pavement last?

In general, a well-installed asphalt pavement can last up to 20 years or more, if properly maintained and taken care of, before needing any major repairs or replacement.

Is it necessary to excavate the old asphalt pavement in preparation for a new one?

This highly depends on the condition of the asphalt. Most of the time, asphalt pavements only need resurfacing – this is adding a new layer of asphalt. However, if the existing asphalt pavement is severely damaged, a complete excavation is required before laying down the new asphalt.

Will asphalt pavement last longer if the previous one was excavated?

Not really. Most of the time, asphalt pavements last longer when the pre-existing pavement is used as a base. This gives the pavement a thicker layer of asphalt, making the structure a lot stronger.

How long before I can use my asphalt driveway after it is installed?

Generally, you can already use the driveway 24 hours after it is installed. However, factors like surface temperature and weather conditions can affect setting time of asphalt so be mindful of them.

Is the weather too hot in Summer to pave my asphalt driveway?

Not really. Unlike concrete, asphalt is actually a lot easier to finish during hot seasons.

What is sealcoating?

Sealcoating is the process of coating an existing asphalt pavement. It protects the pavement from weather and traffic wear.

Do I have to sealcoat my asphalt driveway every year?

Not necessarily. An asphalt paved driveway can be sealcoated at least every 3 to 5 years. But to keep it in a good condition, it is recommendable to sealcoat it bi-yearly.

What are contributors to asphalt pavement deterioration?

There are several factors that can cause an asphalt pavement to deteriorate. It usually depends on the construction of the asphalt pavement, weather conditions, and surface exposure of chemicals, oil, and gasoline.

Can I get my asphalt driveway in any color other than black?

Yes, you may. Color additives can be added in the mixture; however, they are really costly and detrimental.
