Asphalt paving projects are an expensive commitment that many home and business owners will need to do to keep their pavements strong. They take time and money to get done. However, your job isn’t done even after the asphalt has settled since there are a few things you should still consider after your asphalt paving project is completed.
Things You Should Consider After Your Asphalt Paving Project
Completing your asphalt paving project isn’t the end of your worries when it comes to keeping your pavement in good condition. You have to know a few things to make sure that your asphalt pavement will last. We’ve listed down a few of these things below to make your life as an asphalt pavement owner much easier.
Constant Maintenance is a Must
We’ve mentioned this dozens of times in our previous articles. We cannot stress how important maintenance is if you want to keep your pavement in good condition. Maintenance makes sure that your pavement doesn’t develop cracks, stress fractures and potholes. You can easily catch the early signs of these problems before they become too big for a quick repair.
Wait a Day Before Using Your Pavement
If you’re feeling eager about driving your car onto the pavement, then curb your enthusiasm as you need to wait a bit before using it. The reason why you should let it rest for a day is to make sure that it has time to settle and cure. Driving a vehicle on freshly laid down asphalt can cause uneven spots and even potholes to appear on your brand new asphalt. The worst part is that these potholes and uneven spots become semi permanent as the asphalt hardens.
Sealcoat It Frequently A Year After Installation
Sealcoating your pavement should be one thing you should consider for your pavement. Sealcoating is a great way to protect a pavement from the elements while also giving it a clean gloss and shine. However, do note that you should wait a year or so before applying a sealcoating to your pavement.
The main reason why you want to wait is to make sure that your pavement has had enough time to cure. Similar to how you should wait till you use it, sealcoating won’t have very many benefits during this curing period.
Stay Away from The Edges of Your Pavement
After a pavement project is completed, you should ensure that you have a way to keep vehicles from driving over the edges of your pavement as much as possible. The weakest point in any asphalt pavement are the edges. This is where most cracks start because of how much more exposed the edges are compared to the center.
Avoid Leaving Heavy Objects In a Single Spot
Heavy objects on a freshly paved asphalt pavement is a recipe for disaster. Heavy objects in a single spot can cause the asphalt to sink during the curing period. This includes vehicles so you have to make sure that you park in different spots if you intend to use your pavement after the project is completed.
